Prof. Christophe Detavernier
Christophe Detavernier obtained a PhD in Solid-state Physics at Ghent University in 2001. From 2002 – 2004, he worked at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Centre in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., where he obtained first-hand experience of research in an industrial environment. He was appointed research professor (in 2005) and full professor (in 2012) at the Department of Solid-state Sciences at UGent, where he leads the CoCooN group. His research interests are situated in the field of thin film materials research, with a focus on (1) Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) for conformal coating of nanostructured surfaces and nanoporous materials, (2) combinatorial thin film deposition for efficient screening of compositional libraries, and (3) in situ characterization techniques for fast screening of the annealing behaviour of coatings. He has co-authored more than 200 publications and is co-inventor of 14 patent applications. In 2010, he was awarded a Starting Grant by the European Research Council on ALD for conformal coating of nanoporous materials. In 2014, he was awarded a Proof of Concept grant by the ERC for developing an ALD-based approach for coating nanoparticles. In 2015, he was "Laureate of the Academy" at the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts. Since 2018, he coordinates HYCOAT, a European Training Network for functional hybrid coatings by Molecular Layer Deposition.
